A note from a fan

We were delighted to find a fan letter from a NYC mom in our mailbox last week. She writes:

I have a daughter age 2 1/2...and I just HAD to tell you how much she loves your "Jones" dress!!! I bought it for her in mid December from Jellyfish NYC to wear to some upcoming holiday parties, etc.

She literally has worn it EVERY DAY since. Except when it was absolutely filthy and I had to hide it from her in the hamper. She wore it to every holiday "party" this season: two hannukah parties, her class party, Christmas Eve, a post-holiday party, New Year's eve and a New Year's Day party.

She loves this dress. Loves. Loves. Loves.

It is really a perfect dress...and the fact that it "twirls" - which is now a Must-Have for her, makes it infinitely more perfect.

Our denim leggings which are milled in the US and made right here in Los Angeles. They are soft, lightweight and completely comfortable for sizes 12m through 16Y. We have a skinny style for layering, Full length cuff for a sporty look, and our zipper style.

We are extremely conscious about how each garment feels on, which is why we attach a facing insert on the inside of the denim which prevents skin contact from the brass zipper. Our denim leggings are a favorite style among many retailers, including one of our East Coast retailers who has best described them as "the best jegging around."

Introducing our first official Stella Muse! We believe every girl is a star. Our idea is to share the shining moments in everyday life of a Stella rising star. We will be selecting new Muses to join our star factory as we design future collections. Tell us about your Muse, she may very well become our star attraction.

This season, we present Coco from Brooklyn, New York. Here we open a window into the world of Coco as she gets ready to celebrate her friend’s Birthday. We went to view Beauty Culture at Annenburg Space for Photography recently. A 10 year old Stella Fashion Stylist came along to study the exhibit with me.

This fertile goddess was the ultimate beauty back in the day. 24,000BC Venus of Willendorf. In my book, being a Mother is definitely beautiful. The show includes some violent images that may not be suitable for children.

In some ways we enjoyed running around the grounds more than the show. The architecture is very thoughtfully designed.

Traveling is one of my passions, but with a full time job and a family school schedule to manage, opportunities for going far and exotic places don't come around enough. I like to do small, quick getaways for a change of scene, a break from everyday routine. It's like clicking the "refresh" button for the creative mind. A weekend at Parker in Palm Springs recharged us. We frolicked and romped. Here follows a travel-fashion log of our stay.

We had a wonderful summer vacation in Catalina,
an exotic island 22 miles southwest of Los Angeles.

Our adventure started with an hour boat ride.
Here are some highlights from our itinerary.

Our island home was Catalina Canyon Resort and Spa

Relaxing and swimming in the surf at Descanso Beach Club, the best place for R&R in Avalon. The beach grille served our lunch by the loungers. The food was especially yummi with the sound of the ocean at our feet. From here we could make out a hazy outline of San Pedro.

Hiking the Trans Catalina Trail. It was challenging, but seeing gorgeous wild flowers in bloom was worth every step in the heat. We packed a lot of water and covered ourselves in sunscreen.

We visited the Catalina Island Museum.

Patty Boyd photography exhibition was on view. We enjoyed learning about her life and marriage to the Beatle, George Harrison and later,Eric Clapton.

Here I want to share our lovely visit to NYC.

We made our home base in NYC at 135 Metropolitan avenue in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.

Smart Apartments

This is a great alternative to staying in a hotel. In fact, we will be making this our NYC family vacation destination every year.

Williamsburg rocks! We love the water side parks, wider streets and views of the sky.

We had a great designer kitchen in our apartment. We shopped as locals do, at Union Square Farmers Market in the city for fruits and vegetables. August is a delicious month for locally grown heirloom tomatoes, apricots, blueberries, peaches and melons. We ate very well.

Bouchon Bakery in Time Warner at Columbus Circle is a budget way to enjoy famed chef, Thomas Keller's creations. Sophia gives their quiche a big thumbs up.

One of my favorite places to shop for women's fashion in NYC is Opening Ceremony. The owners have a keen eye for offering a specific mix of designers and collaborations with labels that have been around for a while. This shop is a really fun experience.

There was great fun at the opening night of Art In The Streets at The Geffen Contemporary at Moca in Los Angeles.

I grew up in and near 70's New York city. I loved watching dilapidated subway trains covered in graffiti rolling by. They capture the mood of those times just right, chaos, urban decay due to crumbling city finances. The screeching graffiti trains were like screaming visual poems.

In the 80's, It was hard to miss Keith Haring emerging as a prolific street artist. His very graphic, slyly humorous, simple white chalk drawings on blank black poster boards in subway stations seemed to pop up every where almost over night especially in my old East Village NYC neighborhood.

The best part of checking out the opening night at MOCA was meeting the artists themselves and asking them to tag my Clegeries!

If you are in town it's definitely worth a visit to MOCA. Or just look around you, there is probably some graffiti. Here is one of many around Stella Los Angeles downtown design studio.

School is over soon and we are dreaming and preparing for our little summer vacation. I call it little because we are not traveling a long distance from our home base. We love living in Los Angeles for the sunshine and precious natural resources nearby. Our exotic destination is Catalina Island.It is a world away from Stella Design studio in Downtown Los Angles. The best thing about this island? There are no cars! Get a peek at their webcam here.

We are planning for biking, hiking, swimming and relaxing. There is so much relaxing to do and so little time. Here is a selection of items we are packing.

We'll be packing plenty of sun screen, our needlepoint projects, note books, sketch books, books , camera, and music. Oh, we are going to where the buffaloes roam.

Is it fashion or art? or both? I first learned about Victor & Rolf's amazing collection called Russian Doll at an exhibition curated at the Museum of Contemporary Art Los Angeles in 2007 called Skin + Bones. This is a description of the collection from V&R's blog page:

"Russian Doll

In the winter of 1999 we appeared on the cat walk ourselves to dress a single model, Maggie Rizer, in nine layers of jewel encrusted dresses. After each layer, the small pedestal on which Maggie stood would rotate, giving the audience an opportunity to see a particular set on her before the next layer was laid on. When the final veil had been draped around her, Maggie was carrying approximately 70 kilos of richly decorated textures on her shoulders.

We intended this presentation as an ode to exclusivity and unavailability, the things that give fashion its aura. Once occluded by the next layer, the previous layer remained present on stage, but impossible for the audience to see."

Watch these videos in two parts and you will see this fashion as art. This is one fashion show I wish I was invited to attend front row center.

It was really fun creating a friendly booth out of found objects. We had to do a little brain storming for a simple yet elegant booth that would cost almost nothing to put together. We love using found objects, recycling, and re-using materials. While driving to the studio one morning, we found abandoned wooden crates out side of a local art gallery, new puppy (love the name btw).

This really was the perfect material to showcase our comfy chic, and fantasy girl dresses.

Along with our dresses, we displayed fun, fabulous floral designs for the home. And super cute knitting materials, nothing makes us feel cozier than seeing balls of yarn. We love anything that is hand made.

And here are our beautiful Starlet dresses on display. Lots of parents, uncles, aunts and little girls went home happy with their Starlet dresses!

Los Angeles is alive with creativity

This past weekend was a blast! Stella industries joined 324 other local designer Holiday Gift show UniqueLA.

We had no idea what to expect from our very first retail pop up shop! It turned out to be a very exciting, jam packed two day event. According to Sonja Rasula, the founder of Unique LA, there were some 8,000 shoppers.

I can't say we met them all, but we did meet and assist so many new Stella clients.

It was super exciting to meet our customers face to face. We loved bonding with them and getting feed back on our work. Here is naming a few of our wonderful customers:

a staff from the office of Chief Officer Beck, LAPD,

an Oscar winning film producer, Cathy Schulman of Crash,

a local milliner that's been making hats for 23 years Louise Green Millinery Co.

and many more wonderful folks that are designers, teachers, architects, night club owners, gallery owners, and more. It was a great cross section of our Los Angeles community and some from as far as NYC. Thank you all for supporting stella industries. We look forward to seeing you at Unique LA holiday event next year or sooner!

YIn and Yang

I find myself often saying to the children, "pay attention." I've been walking on this street crossing for almost 5 years now to reach my design studio in downtown Los Angeles. It was only last week I "paid attention" to what I was walking on all this time. It made me smile to find this Yin and Yang symbol.

This is a chinese philosophy definition of Yin an Yang. As part of the Tao, they are merely two aspects of a single reality. Each contains the seed of the other, which is why we see a black spot of Yin in the white Yang and vice versa. They do not merely replace each other but actually become each other through the constant flow of the universe.
